Initial Thoughts on AOI-Competition

Pros:
  • This Years Brief Isn't focused on London specifically so I can go sit in a local city and draw inspiration from something uniquely northern.
  • I really want to work with Museums so this puts me towards a correct path i want to go down professionally
  • Opportunity for reportage and life drawings

Cons:
  • I find it difficult to draw noise
  • I tend to avoid drawing urban environments
  • I hate and can't draw transport

This could be very rewarding and fulfilling if I manage this correctly.  Hopefully this work will make me feel more ready for level 6.

Initial Thoughts

How do I feel about re-submitting OUIl503?

Not great, however I know where I went wrong Initially and how I need to fix and improve to help develop my practice.

I'm seeing this resubmission as a learning curve as well as a turning point in my practice.
I aim to use this to the benefit of myself and learn greatly from it. Improving my work and myself for next year.

Applied Illustration Presentation Boards

Final 505 Product

OUIL 505 Photo shoot.

  • The Photo shoot went relatively well, setting up was a bit of a faff but otherwise was fine.
  • Setting the box and characters up was harder pre-shoot because it turned out that the lid had been printed out at the wrong size so it was too big for the box. Something I would need to look at in future if remaking this.
  • The characters were tricky to cut and mount. I'd probably look at using the laser cutter to create cleaner lines sent time.

OUIL 505 Printing & Redesign

I got them printed on time and i'm please with the results, Next time I'd maybe make the board game bigger but I don't know if I'm just being pernickety.
I also redesigned the payable characters and feel like they are better suited to the style of game I'm making. I ended up basing the characters off people I know, I found that relating them to similar personalities I knew meant that I was able to draw more expressive characters.

OUIL 505 Designs, Crit & Reflection

  • The Design used was based of a Tudor one from a collection of Tudor patterns , It was complex enough to be interesting but simple enough not to overwhelm or be too time consuming to design.
  • Simply replacing the roses with Syphilises face allowed me to illustrate without words what this game was focused on.
  • Drawing the playable characters was more difficult because I didn't want them to just be the Hollywood versions of tudor people who are all clean, healthy and slim.
  • I wasn't really feeling them but I thought the Milk Maid looked okay?
  • Ben said they looked more like character studies of what people in that era wore than playable characters for this sinister fun game.
  • He's right and I don't think that they need to have their full bodes for you to know they're a duke or a milk maid,I should make characters that are fun and fit with the game. They're not the centrepieces anyway.
