OUIL504 - After Effects

  • Every project must contain at least 1 composition
  • All compositions can have the same assets, e.g. audio
  • Means less files to manage.
  • Shapes using solid layers to animate

In Composition/ Layers

Press the layer +

P = Position
A= Ancor point
R = Rotation
S = Scale
T = Opacity
U= All of the animated properties I've changed

For two properties and shift
e.g.
P + Shift+ A = Anchor and Position

In time

O - I Move the ruler to end/ beginning point of a layer

Use Ram Preview for Accurate frame rate

Work area bare allows for selection of where to start
B- Mover work area to where your time maker is
N- sets the end of work area

Zine, Concept and development

  •  Over the summer I went to my brothers Nigerian Engagement Ceremony.

  •  Although I did other things this event stood out the most.

  • Mainly because It was the Best/Worst Even I've ever been to
  • It was great getting deeper involved in my culture
  • Also Great to realise that my Nigerian Side of the Family are the best when we're all pissed

  • The only way I got through this day was because of the amazing zine I knew it would make.

Its going to be developed into a 4 comic panel per page zine that dictates different point in time throughout that day.

Realisation

I had a crit with Ben who, help me stop freaking out about all the directions I felt I needed to go in as I had gotten myself in a rut.

The Rape of Lucrece

Becoming more focused on 2 standout pieces from my book which where the rape of lucrece and Iago 'I am not what I seem'  character drawings

Iago Character Initial Ideas

Taking them and creating monsters or abstract scenarios out of the darker parts of shakespeare writing allowing for room for the viewer to not be explicitly shown what is happening but implicating with motifs and imagery.

The Rape of Lucrece - Aftermath

It also forces me to look at more abstract and metaphorical scenarios that depict poignant and prolific events without the being cliche.

Laura Carlin

Looking at the work of Laura Carlin maybe a good start in the more abstract construction of concepts.
Guillermo Del Toro
Also with the idea of creating more abstract characters such as iago not just being a cracked mask or something very cliche when thinking about monsters and evil looking an artist and concept designs that redefine and remold the view of monsters like Guillermo Del Toro.

Shakespeare Visual Journal Pt2

  • After the crit I just started to make work there was no real rhyme or reason just going on instinct and praying it would give me something.
  • I started playing with collage after some research on elizabethan colour theory.

  • Looking at the Idea of a Female Othello, questioning power dynamics.
  • However this is something that would have to have the whole series of prints focused on if done looking at lagos misogyny and Othello's issues with both their race and gender. It strays away from the brief In a way I don't think I can really Justify or have the passion to try to.
  • One of the first phrases Iago says to another person is "I am not what I seem" and this quote got stuck in my head, because it set up lagos characters malicious intentions for you straight away and I wanted to explore that more.
  • Looking at taking the quote as a title and then literally dehumanising  Iago to create and instant visual relation between Iago and the concept of evilness.

  • After Our crit I decided to study the female figure more.
  • I don't know why.
  • I think I panicked.
  • The layering of the inks to create the images was a nice effect that I think may be interesting to come back to in the future?

  •  I also forgot how to draw black female faces so Drew a load of them on newsprint then stapled it into a book.
  • Once again post crit panic on my behalf
  • I'm trying but maybe I need to step back and look at the work I've made and see if there are any stand out pieces that can be refined.

OUIL504 Research Pt 1

Colour Symbolism in the Shakespearean Era.

Using research I want to delve deeper into the importance of colour especially in Shakespeare's life as colour in context had a major role to play in the way he wrote and constructed his plays.

"The symbolic meaning of colours during the Elizabethan era were also important and their meanings were also well understood. The meaning behind colours symbolised events which occurred in history, many of which dated back, and related to, biblical meanings of colours. The Christian meaning of colours were highly symbolic. The meaning of colours during the Elizabethan era therefore represented many aspects of their life."     - http://www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/meaning-colors.htm

Shakespeare Visual Journal Pt1

  • This mark represents how Shakespeare's work was wrapped up in political and familial conflict often ending in death.
  •  Much how Shakespeare's own life contained complexities when in came to things as his social status, religion and political loyalties that could have easily seen him dead.
  •  Creating a mark for individual plays could help me visualise how I feel about them.
  • First attempt a visualisation of a motif - Possessiveness
  • Purple used for historical context how purple was legally only allowed to be worn by royalty.
  • Will look into using colours and imagery that relates to the time period they where from and there significance.
  • Enjoyed the more abstract for, of this although the hands could interact more.
  • Look into the major sins & emotions used in Shakespeare's work.
  • How Shakespeare's Catholicism did impact on his work and the way he wrote his characters,
  • Guilt is a major part of most of his plays as it is heavily discussed and practiced within Catholicism.
  • This piece was rushed, poorly crafted and no real thought went into composition.
  • Creating a creature that symbolises the Shakespearian catholic ideals of guilt maybe something to look into.
  • Testing out the idea of guilt but not in anyway personified
  • Line work is too rough as is shading.
  • Need to use more hand and face references, black paper would have been good here.

  • Working out the routes I can explore within my journal.
  • Use of Biblical/Catholic morals and imagery is crucial to the way I want to approach this.
  • Research and Reflection will be important to developing my visual work in this module.
  • Starting to use both text and imagery??
  • Tried to begin by taking quotes from texts and creation illustrations for them.
  • i don't think this is too bad but it isn't to the high level of crafting I want also the paint refused to work on the shiny surface of the printed paper.
  • Need to look in to typography and lettering again
  • Less colours as I will only be using 2 colours (+3 if I incorporate the paper and negative space within my image)
  • Focusing on 2 plays instead of 3 allows for more in depths looks into  both the play and narrative poem
  • Type and Lettering need to be used or attempted at within my sketchbook next.
  • Try some larger scale things to help push boundaries and take more risks maybe.
  • Look deeper into race and gender within both play/poem as well as their historical context.
