Traveling man

This is my rick and Morty piece for travelling man.

Pros:
This is the first finished image I've created that has multiple character's within it.
The composition hasn't worked out too bad.

Cons:
Consistency in colouring could be better.

Lino Printing - 1 per week

I'm doing a horror lino per week and a Editorial image every fortnight The horror prints will be all lino but the editorial images will be a mixture of lino, drypoint, mono and digital.

I'm playing with reduction lino and maybe some lino + watercolour.

Editorial based on cholera in the river ganges

Jester print for horror print a week -will water colour some of these

Thought Buble??? Jinman 2

Olivia and I just got a Table at Thought bubble and we took this as it it's such a big opportunity I'm worried I've jinmaned myself again by having something which has such a short deadline but a lot of work needs to be turned around and made for it. I'm going to try to control how much i'm doing since i've got this, cop, extended practice, ppp, Creative Network Table and my part time job.

Ive started to contact a risograph printer about getting some sketchbooks and zines made.

Editorial Brief (Not Originally but now it is)

Firstly I wanted to begin what was to be my series of character boards that would all be based on a weekly design of drawing a humanised disease; capitalising off my 505 project last year with humanised Syphilis.

Unfortunately at first I began to research smallpox found out the first recorded case was in Egypt and really just drew an egyptian pharaoh with Syphilis which isn't what i aim to go for.

Refocusing myself on Cholera I took its traits and symptoms, exaggerating them into a character.
The sketching side of things went well however final linings become lack luster and lost some of the characteristics. I've decided to linocut this image in its final form, using rougher and more expressive lino cutting techniques to keep the expressive lines and feel of my final sketch.

On reflection of this image and a discussion with Ben about how the origins of cholera came from a isolated indian village in 5th century and how that's what I began to base the character disign on I was questioned on how i  could yous slight symbolism or iconography within the image to hit towards india. So I've added a bolded line which mimics the root of the ganges river. By doing this however I then change the context of the image. It becomes More editorial and starts to discus the sacredness of cleaning yourself in the rivers of india and how that can be linked to the constant presence of cholera there. This then becomes an editorial piece that could be put into a historical or medical magazine.

As a result of this I have decided to focus on an editorial series instead of the character designs as I believe that I can come up with a better brief concept for because I want to do character boards instead of just one image per character as I am known to do and what i have begun to do with this brief.

Quick Thing

Focusing more on Editorial than just random character work now. Will probably do a horror print per week but also want to build up a portfolio of historical editorial work as well

RPG Illustrated Guides

Looking at making some Character boards and setting designs based around an rpg i am Game master for.

Terrible events into Terrible Tales

Looking at Characters concept and creating a book of monsters based of Historical event, diseases, folklore and Strange events. For example Mary Toft was a woman who gave 'birth' to rabbits, and other small woodland creatures all mismatched and deformed. Using this information I could make multiple character boards a short comic explaining the creature created based around Mary along side sketches and 'anatomy diagrams'. This could become even more immersive with a series of short video documentaries and maybe even some staged photos?

The reason I want to do this is because it mixes my love of history and horror with my skill for research. It similarly to my previous idea allows me to translate Knowledge gained by research into a learning based visual series of images.

Chose your own limited adventure

Finding this book called the prospect before her in York which looks at the roles of western women between 1500 and 1800. I've thought about creating a choose your own adventure with this book as the main context for this book emphasising the lack of choices for women in the 17th century.

Pros-
-allows my love of research humour and history to come together to make an fun informative book.
-I can market is as an educational book for young adults allowing them to learn how far the prospects of women have advanced within the last 100 or so years.
-It's  product that could be sold in both social and living museums in the uk.
-Also Just found out that the Choose your own adventure format is not copyrighted to one specific company

Cons
-Very text heavy usually it will need lots of reformatting to get the right balance of image to text.
-Time consuming task to research and create the frame for the book as well as all the writing and images.
-Is there enough time for development of imagery

Summary

Maybe look towards smaller projects that allow for more development and production time.

OUIL503 Resubmission Module Evaluation

This Re-Submission has shown me the importance of blogging although I still find it very difficult just to blog regularly as I think that when I walk things out with other people or with myself I mentally check it off as thinking I’ve blogged it or it’s something that everybody understands without explanation. However you can’t do that when working on briefs because then you end up no being able to show or reflect on work that has not been physically document and a client may want to see how the work has progressed and may prefer previous draft ideas to what you give them. This also helps stop plagiarism and copyright issues that of you’re not able to back up can ruin your career. This brief has been a bit of a challenge due to the nature of the brief. As I’ve said before drawing/visualising sound is something that I can’t really do and it frustrates me so I don’t do it. Also I don't tend to work with urban landscapes or vehicles a lot so I lack proficiency in drawing them as well.

Collecting Observation research and concepts is something I didn’t know i’d enjoy however similar to secondary research It’s something that I find fun and easy to get in-depth with. Although visually documenting my findings on sight such as most reportage illustration isn't something I can do. I prefer to take all the information and evidence down through recordings, note takings and photographs then re group and reflect on that research most likely using further artist and secondary research to help along side drawing and then accumulating that into sketches and ideas.

Once the ideas and the media for the concept was chosen it was quite easy to start constructing the posters. Forcing myself to push my craft and be more critical of my work as I went along allowed my final pieces to thrive.

Overall This resubmission has slowed me to push the quality of my final pieces of work and to help reiterate the important of blogging. However I don’t want to end up in this position again so my focus will be to hit the module assessment criteria so that I don’t end up back in this position.

Final Poster Designs

An Odinary Day In the City (Digital)
The City Sounds Colourful (Photography & Digital)
The Sound of The Clock (Brush Pen & Digital)

Central of Observation

All of the Poster Ideas Theme around all of the observational research I have done to create and develop art and ideas for this brief. Observation in the moment can help me form ideas and sometimes add context to my drawings. It works well for research and thematic inspiration however I know that I'm not a in the moment drawer and I need to take photos, noise recordings and other memorabilia from the day of research and use that to develop art work. I then begin to pop in and out of town to do more in the moment first person research to gauge an idea and use the evenings and every other day to develop the first sketches and concepts.

Repetition

Repeating observational and imagery based on photographs taken was important too the process of developing my poster ideas. I't helped me see what I did and didn't like to draw ergo giving me a better idea of what to focus on. Also I built up more competent techniques for drawing unfamiliar objects such as birds, transport and clocks.

Tile Time: Development for Poster 2

Deciding to go for a tile shape that the images would have to conform to it allowing me to make a uniformed pattern base.
After looking over the Aoi brief again and seeing that it want's a semblance of diversity within the image to best represent the city I am focusing on both my male and female talking tiles showing a variety of ethnicities. I have The male tile with all it's variations here so that you can see what I'm now going for.

Final Draft for 3rd Poster

This was the most fun sketch for me really.
I wanted to create a design that would take me out of my comfort zone.
Using the photos I took and the low key concept that has been going on in my head about sound being translated into strips and woven together to make a sound tapestry.
I enjoyed this the most as an end result, It feels like mixing medias and allowing myself to have fun with the work I produce helps me a lot.
For the final Image However I need some Cleaner photographs of some of the buildings and cars and also maybe look at expanding the image further.

Final Draft for 2nd Poster

This Poster Design I more of a repeat pattern, inspired by the Pattern designs of Jemma Salume whose pattern work is usually themes and she molds images into specific shapes showing both variety and uniformity. I don't feel like keeping them all restricted to one shape will really work, however I do thin cleaner line work and simpler block colours will.

The theme for this is just everyday Sounds of the City. It isn't any city in particular more of an amalgamation of visiting different cities and seeing/hearing repeating sounds and visuals.

Final draft for 1st Poster

This Is the Final Draft for my First Sketch.
Media wise I've been playing around with brush pens and acrylic however i'll probably go for designing all of the main images such as the pigeons, the buses, the clock and the market callers in brush and colouring them digitally. As I prefer the brush pen lines to the more controlled digital lines for this. Keeping the hand craft with the lining but using photoshop and my online brushes to create vivid colouring should work really well together.

Clocks and Ideas

M&S Clock Leeds Market 1884
Leeds Rathaus.jpg
Town Hall Clock 1853-1858
Parkinson Building, Leeds University, England-12Sept2010.jpg
Built 1930-1951 Parkinson Building Clock
For one of the designs I want to use a Historic monument of leeds as the main focal point, mixing the history of the city with the sounds of it. showing visually how both affect one another. I looked at clocks because when going through leeds the sound of a clock bonging the hour is something that is symbolic to me of a city and I think that in all cities this is a good way of indicating a passage of time. I'm more inclined towards the marks and spencers one due to it's Historical and cultural symbolism, Also M&S is very well known throughout the UK however it's not as well known that it was started in Leeds. The clock also rediseds in Leeds Market, one of europe's largest indoor markets which if full of sound of market stalls, the buses going by, birds going in and out, people talking. In away the Market has it's own soundscape, compared to that of the centre or outskirts of leeds, and I feel it would be an interesting and enlightening endeavor to have the context of one poster focus on the sounds of the city but specifically the sounds of a specific and to the locals well known part of the city. To those who don't know that part of leeds it will become educational but for those who know it it will be an exciting representation of leeds historic past.

Abstract or Narrative

Similar to  Hurtado's collage work I'm thinking of making one of my poster based off collage work made of the photographs I took in town. Mixed in with more traditional drawings maybe the clash of aesthetics, colour and media will echo the chaos of the city.

Edwood's and Takemasa's work is more literal, narrating a scene what one would find in the city, either something very specific like bread at the baker's stall in the market or a busy intersection in the city. More narrative and scenic however I don't think I want my work to be that literal. Creating sound visually is very abstract to me and I won't my work to reflect that. Maybe create a non-linear or non classical narrative in the poster depicting how I adapted this foreign way of working and visual depiction to suit me.

Roughs And initial concepts

This next part of the project I have difficulty describing because I tend to get caught up in the concept of idea and making things rather than reflecting or documenting them.

A lot of these roughs and scamps look ill put together or maybe even nonsensical but I did find them helpful in finding out what i did and didn't want from my work.

Due to the size of the canvas there is more focus on the compositing and use of negative space for me in this one. Also you need to really look at if the work would fit well onto merchandise.

I've got some vague ideas for designs but I'm going to hash them out futher and then choose which ones I'm taking forward.

Snap Shots Of The City

After Setting myself up in town for another day of observational drawings I came to a couple of realisations an hour or so into trying to depict the Sounds of the City I felt overwhelmed and uninspired. I work best with reflection, hindsight allows me to review and assess the information presented to me as well as stopping myself from becoming too stuck in my own head. The need for constant reflection will be crucial throughout all the progress my work goes on.

Because of this I decided to get myself a disposable camera and take pictures around the city, documenting the hustle and bustle of different parts of leeds from the more quiet areas to the louder ones. Taking photographs of single people who played the accordion or where just humming to themselves. With these images i can look at what makes the sound viable in the image and put that into my art work rather than becoming too overwhelmed and stressed by the idea of capturing sound instantaneously.

Artists And Sounds

These artists work display sound to me in both the obvious and oblivious ways which is why i compiled them together. Size, shape, line and colour are used as visual markers of sound in different artist work. Experimenting with these components individually and seeing which one works the best will help deliver me towards a final solution when it comes to depicting sound in my posters.

Parkinson Steps Drawings

Deciding to go and start doing drawings and collecting sounds in different parts of the city I started this process at the Parkinson Steps spending 3 hours drawing, observing and listening. I also recorded the sounds to do some soundscaping later.  I learnt these things: 1. I can't draw cars 2.Drawing sounds is hard 3. People move too much same with cars.

I am going to look further into artists whose art illustrates noise and sounds, to me, so that I have a greater understanding and concept of how I'm going to tackle this brief visually.

Day1 Static Observational Drawings

Because I live in the city, almost the centre I thought why not get the sounds of the city via your living room. We have a lot of people coming and going from here, you can hear things like construction, traffic, business bustling etc from our own home. I just did some continuous line drawings, finding that this method helps me capture the moment of an event, faster and with more honesty than trying to sketch it out then draw over it.

I'm thinking of sitting on the Parkinson steps from 11:30 -2 next week to capture the business of a university campus and the city mingling together.

London Transport Museum

Looking at Past Posters for London Transport as well as Past winners of this Competition to see if there was a common link between what London Transport wants to see. One in particular is the idea of a story behind the posters, the need for research and context behind the image seems to make a piece of work more likely to be used by the London Transport. The need for transportation and the london underground symbol is as integral as first thought, however this doesn't mean I shouldn't use transportative imagery. Research and Context will be the next steps made by me in developing my intial ideas.

Looking at the Brief

Looking over this brief, and the previous winners and themes of the competition I think a big thing about this brief is colour and a sense of either high crafted or hand made aesthetic to it. The work being able to tell a story whether abstract or linear is important to them, and also makes it accessible to the public who will be seeing the work all over town. It's important to use the underground transport logo if you're not going to use vehicles although vehicles are still important to the brief.

Because this is the first brief set without the main focus being on London I'm a bit unsure of how to approach it. Usually people have used either landmarks or used very london specific visual markers to link it to london and london transport. However I want to focus on the North and northern cities which tends to go against the imagery produced by previous winners. However since they want to also look at non-london based cities in the briefs details I aim to capitalise on this.

illustration isn't solely focused on London transport but how the transport is an integral part of london life even in the smallest ways. There is a strong sense of texture and craft in this work, using more muted colours to allow for a denser sense of texture allows the piece to not be too overwhelmed by the contrast of different patterns and textures.

The london eye in the corner is the hint of landmark needed to place it in london.

Maybe if I focus on Leeds or Wakefield  city I should Look at symbols and buildings related with Leeds or Wakefield.

I should probably make a list of monuments and visual symbols for both.

Initial Thoughts on AOI-Competition

Pros:
  • This Years Brief Isn't focused on London specifically so I can go sit in a local city and draw inspiration from something uniquely northern.
  • I really want to work with Museums so this puts me towards a correct path i want to go down professionally
  • Opportunity for reportage and life drawings

Cons:
  • I find it difficult to draw noise
  • I tend to avoid drawing urban environments
  • I hate and can't draw transport

This could be very rewarding and fulfilling if I manage this correctly.  Hopefully this work will make me feel more ready for level 6.

Initial Thoughts

How do I feel about re-submitting OUIl503?

Not great, however I know where I went wrong Initially and how I need to fix and improve to help develop my practice.

I'm seeing this resubmission as a learning curve as well as a turning point in my practice.
I aim to use this to the benefit of myself and learn greatly from it. Improving my work and myself for next year.

Applied Illustration Presentation Boards

Final 505 Product

OUIL 505 Photo shoot.

  • The Photo shoot went relatively well, setting up was a bit of a faff but otherwise was fine.
  • Setting the box and characters up was harder pre-shoot because it turned out that the lid had been printed out at the wrong size so it was too big for the box. Something I would need to look at in future if remaking this.
  • The characters were tricky to cut and mount. I'd probably look at using the laser cutter to create cleaner lines sent time.

OUIL 505 Printing & Redesign

I got them printed on time and i'm please with the results, Next time I'd maybe make the board game bigger but I don't know if I'm just being pernickety.
I also redesigned the payable characters and feel like they are better suited to the style of game I'm making. I ended up basing the characters off people I know, I found that relating them to similar personalities I knew meant that I was able to draw more expressive characters.

OUIL 505 Designs, Crit & Reflection

  • The Design used was based of a Tudor one from a collection of Tudor patterns , It was complex enough to be interesting but simple enough not to overwhelm or be too time consuming to design.
  • Simply replacing the roses with Syphilises face allowed me to illustrate without words what this game was focused on.
  • Drawing the playable characters was more difficult because I didn't want them to just be the Hollywood versions of tudor people who are all clean, healthy and slim.
  • I wasn't really feeling them but I thought the Milk Maid looked okay?
  • Ben said they looked more like character studies of what people in that era wore than playable characters for this sinister fun game.
  • He's right and I don't think that they need to have their full bodes for you to know they're a duke or a milk maid,I should make characters that are fun and fit with the game. They're not the centrepieces anyway.

OUIL505 OH BOY!!!

Guess who put there 505 Print Slot Right a day after their Cop Print Slot!!!

I Didn't think This Through.

OUIL503 End of Module evaluation

This Module sure has been something. Although more frustrating at times than rewarding in hindsight I have learnt a lot from responsive. By choosing a variety of briefs I was able to see where my bodies as skills like in some parts of the creative field as well as learning how I work with other creatives in different fields to mine. The importance of time management couldn’t have been emphasised as a more desired skill i need to gain than in entering the Jiman competition, although this brief could be seen as my most least successful one it’s the one i have learnt the most from. By being forced to work on my anatomy, positioning and general sequential narrative skills I have become more realistic in what can be done in certain time periods as well as what I as an individual can do around the time and ongoing briefs/modules I already have. As someone who like to use language within their work the importance of type and placement has started to come through more in my work, especially towards the later briefs. Responsive has started to make me think more about how type and the placement of type can be used to enhance and professionalise work. From this I want to push myself with how I use type as well as maybe venturing into handwritten type myself. Hindsight has been the main theme of this module as I seem to learn more from the creative process of doing the briefs than the actual finished product. However this way of learning and feeling accomplishment works much better for me as a creative then when i focused more on trying to finalise a perfect product without reflecting on the processes I was using and if they were effective for what was being done. D&AD taught me that I don’t like fully open briefs being set for me, well I do, but to help me focus on creating more efficient and beneficial end products I need to set myself my own personal restrictions in my work. It allows for more creative and well thought out imagery and stops me from going off in a tandem.

Secret 7 held a new challenge for me in that I’d never done any musical related illustrations before and apart from scheduled quick briefs in the first year I hadn’t personally sought out any more quicker briefs to do however when doing these briefs and setting myself shorter and shorter time limits as I went along I found that I started to come into my own element. I’m thinking of doing some editorial illustrations under similar time constraints to see how that compared to longer more developed pieces of illustration I do stack up.

Collaborative was a lot more conceptual than visual and it made me more uncomfortable that I thought it would Having put something time and effort in the idea generation and refinement of a thing only to come out the end with maybe one or two mockups to illustrate your point was really weird to me and I think it was also weird on my partner as well. Working with someone on a similar brain wave to myself was really nice as it allowed for us to get along well both personally and professionally.  However I think i’d like to work with someone whose work is and personality is more different from mine as the idea of bouncing ideas and fighting our cases as to why certain things should be certain ways would be interesting and challenging when tackling an different collaborative brief. I personally prefer to do more visually led brief/ work but I do like idea generating although I don’t know if that's because I enjoy the idea making process or if it’s because I just like talking.

I’d say responsive has helped me develop my creative mind more than my creative skills but it has put me in good stead for 505 and I feel more knowledgeable about what I do and don’t what to do in my professional practice. I’ll probably do a few more briefs independently to help me keep refining and defining what I want to do as a creative. Having a long briefs and shot briefs going on at the same time helps me as I can change focus from a long brief to a short one which can help me when I get art block. And maintaining a longer brief allows more time for reflection and refinement than most short briefs do.

All in all I found that responsive to me is like going to a foreign country for a holiday and having a brief but passionate love affair with one of the beautiful local men there. It’s not something I would do all the time but it does help me get my mojo back as well as getting me to reflect on myself as a person and what I want to do and where I want to be.

OUIL505 Post Crit

The suggestion of a boarded game has re-infused me with vigour for this project. Thinking along the lines of Communities Board Game or NumberWang from Mitchell and Webb, creating a realistic game based of game parody adverts would be a real interesting undertaking.

Similar to these 'adverts' the game would be suited for 16+ just so I don't need to censor myself and also because you can't really have a pg game based on Historical Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

OUIl505 SketchBook Developing and Panics

After deciding to focus on personifying diseases, I narrowed it down to a time period, So that I could look specifically at the major diseases effecting that time and then translate them into character cards and look at the environments they need to survive and thrive when building up my mini village.

I Really got into charter design with Sweating Sickness and Syphilis and the technique of re drawing a character again and again allowed me for refine my drawings and characters more than I usually do. I began to see more personality in them and their actions.

I have no idea what I'm brining to the table for the next crit. Also what are the products I'm making a comic? a card set? I need to work this out.

Summative Evaluation

What a module!

I really focussed on making it my main mission with this module to make work that took on a more serious tone from my regular work. It, wasn’t necessarily hard to do when it came to my attitude and concepts, but actually executing said concepts and coming up with further work was really difficult for me. So much so that I spent a good 2 weeks pulling blanks. It was then that I found three different methods to overcoming this artist block that in tandem really helped me get on a track that led to me creating some of the strongest pieces I have made to date.

The techniques that helped me where; Distraction, Research and Powering through. At first spending a week away from this module doing other work allowed me to stop fixating on making something that reflected the seriousness of the tragic plays and poems I chose from Shakespeare. However after a week I was still stuck and going back left me extremely frustrated, so I focussed my time between researching artists who have tackled similar subjects in a way I wished my work to go and dissecting the 1 play and 1 narrative poem i’d chosen to do. Armed with a sack of information I forced myself to make a tone of work, the good the bad and mostly the ugly came out of all the work i’d make and through one on one, group and self intimated peer critiques I was able to successfully reflect back on my work and decide what worked and what didn’t.

A big part go this module for me has been forcing my self in both formal and informal situations to reflect back on my work. I try to answer a series of questions in my head to work out the how successful the work is. Is it relevant? Does it say what I want it to say? Could the idea be refined and taken further? What standard of work are we going to be seeing at the end of it’s refinement?

This kind of thinking helped me become more deceive with my work, which meant that 1/3 of the way through this module I knew that I would have to focus on only one piece of work By Shakespeare as I knew before hand that I didn’t wan to focus on Him personally as I have no interest in him but more in his, more controversial works. Although the Rape of Lucrece held a lot of depth to it, Othello’s struggle with his blackness really resonated with me and I felt I could approach his struggle in a more abstract and sensitive way as I understand his conflict better.

Initial ideas for Othello ended up informing the way I went about my final product. I asked a 1st year to pose as Othello for me and he asked me who Othello was. A few others did this too. This would later go on to inform the way I made my book as an almost brief plot summary of Othello. I learnt from this how discussions with people can help later inform your work.

When it came to after effects and the sting, I didn’t find it too frustrating. After hashing out and gaining a solid foundation of what my concepts and imagery for the publication I knew what it  was going to look like. In that knew I wanted to focus more on the idea of creating a shortened narrative within the sting using sound.  Because Shakespeare's work was most powerful spoken i decided to record myself performing some shakespeare. As a result of this I learnt the importance of making shut you are clear and pronounced within your work after re-recording the sound bite later.

The importance of scamps has never left me and was a godsend for this project as i ended up doing hundreds in the effort to create images that maximised the potential of the scene the needed to depict.

I learnt about visual noise and how that can effect the impact of an image on the viewer. I tried to keep this in mind with all my prints however I know if I’d have spent more time thinking about composition and symbolism 2 of the prints could have been better.

The hard backing of the books was important to me as it made me realise that I was starting to think more about the finished standard of my work rather than just churning out content.

If I were to do anything differently next time it would be, blog more consistently and spend more time on developing the prints as a series not just individually.

But overall I feel good about this module. It helped me become more conscience of what my end product would be and what kind of standard I wanted my work to be at.

Final Sting & Revision that was needed

Final Shakespeare Sting from Naomi Crompton on Vimeo.

After a quick surgery with Teresa I re-recorded to voice acting for the sting to make it clearer and changed the font to mimic the publications font.

I'm pleased with the sting as I feel like it works in tandem with the publication.

Initial Sting

Othello Sting from Naomi Crompton on Vimeo.

I wanted my Sting to be dramatic and atmospheric sting relfecting the iniensity of the Tradgedy of Othello.

Deciding to monoprint all the imagery used in my sting I had to take a lot of photos of my hand to get the correct movement. This also allows the piece to pay homage to the 4th print in my book series the death of desdemona.

The initial storyboard her had to be revised slightly after I recorded the line I was going to use from Othello.  Keeping with the aim of this short piece not relying entirely on the animation I wanted the  sound effects to bring the whole thing together.

Personal brief for this project

(For me it taylor the brief, and set out the clear goals I aimed to achieve at the end of it)

  • Someone who has never read or heard of Othello can pick up this book and after looking through it have a basic understanding of the general plot and plot points of Othello.

  • The end product should reflect the source material in its appropriate layout and craftsmanship.

  • Is it something they could sell ing the V&A or a Museum?
