OUIL404 Final 5 Digital images

Colour Experimentation
Cleaning and repositioning of line work

Texture+Saturation experimentation
Texture + Saturation experimentation

Coloured by tablet-3 layers

With this series of images my primary focus was experimentation of colour. I found that changing hue and saturation of layers is a quick way to look at using alternate colours. Using a tablet is something I want to use more of as well. Overall I felt that using block colours in alternate to shading and blending colours worked a lot better, personally I believe I'd rather look at block shading and more solid colours on photoshop than looking at painting via photoshop

OUIL403 A Day in the Life Initial Ideas/ Development

I really enjoyed responding to the article to make the scamps for this. Once I had the idea for the mask symbol I found it a lot easier to design ideas around it. I wanted the scamps to not only compliment the article but to tell the story of the changing culture of the internet and the begin of an era of accountability.

I found that using colour almost immediately when you start formatting your scamps really helps navigate the way you approach a piece. It changes the way the image is read which made me more aware of the way I was composing the image.

I'll be looking into using gouache as my primary media for this piece as block colours are good for conveying a message and with the simplistic way I want to draw the images it allows the block colour to be used as a tool of enhancement not embellishment

However after seeing Yabb Kebbi's pencil work ( Here on PPP blog)  I'll be experimenting with both mediums to see which would be the better one.

OUIL404 Photoshop Workshop 2

Learning how to work with multiply with colour on photoshop I found myself having to work with multiple layers as a way of being able to control my colours.

Using gaussian blur filter I was able to experiment with highlighting the face without it seeming out of place. It's a useful technique to know for both faces and scenery.

Adding texture can work on a piece if it is composed correctly and adds to the piece rather than being a crutch or fancy gimmick for the image. In this case I do not think that the texture adds anything to the image at all.

The use of texture here however feels a lot more appropriate as it adds dimension to the piece by being limited to the head dress, creating a focal point in the image.

OUIL404 Haute Couture sketches

The theme I chose to go with for this was haute couture because I thought it would force me to draw a full human figure instead of just the face. It was a bit challenging getting the clothes to fit the form but it did force me to translate pictures of people into characters with my own tone of voice so that they didn't look copied directly from reference.

This exercise also showed me how I turn things into character design to make sense of them. For me to feel and get into an image I end up creating backstories and personalities for the characters. I would say that I could have been a lot less sketchy in my book and refined some things but I also need to not feel that every little bit needs to be perfect and complete and could just be a half finished sketch.

OUIL403 A-Z poster Development and Final Product

Beginning sketches - Looking at how to compose myself drinking since I have to draw myself 26 times.

Using red as my main colour however it didn't really add anything however it did give me the idea of using it as a spot colour

Using red as a spot colour allows the viewer to instantly recognise the fact that the liquid being drunk from the glass is wine, because of this there is no confusion of what is the focus in the picture.

Over all I do like the way the image has turned out although the line work could have been more consistent; the use of block colour and the red spot colour draws the eye and makes the images easier decipher.

The response for peers to my work echoes my overall reasons for designing the poster the way I did.

One of the first issues I had to confront when crafting this piece was developing it to a point where it could actually be made as I had not got all the letters done for this piece as it was the last idea I quickly sketched up just as a spontaneous idea. However as it was the one picked but my peers I found that to make the process easier I just looked at creating mini scenarios which allowed the drinking to take place anywhere. because I had the one constant which was of me always drinking it allowed the poster to tell a narrative without the use of any dialogue which was something I only fond out when I had finished the poster and could see all the scenes on the same page.

The spacing and craftsman ship of the piece could have been better, the line work is an awkward mix of not being too controlled or too expressive to add to the narrative and maybe create a more loose body figure to reflect the fact that I am drinking wine within the poster. However the block colour helps you lock in on the poster as well as being a device for symbolising the focus point of each letter (which is me drinking). I chose to use a spot colour with the read as I felt it was a crucial device in telling the narrative of the piece otherwise it could have easily been interpreted as me drinking water which doesn't half explain my crazy antics. Spacing and composition could also have been better applied to this piece which is something I will focus more on on my next project.

OUIL404 Photoshop Workshop

Original Scan

Levels adjustments

Warping

Experimenting and with repositioning the lips and cleaning up the lines
Due to being able to reposition and clean up the lining on this piece it allows the piece to have a more professional look about it as well as making it more presentable for portfolio or paid work.

OUIL403 Self-Evaluation

How effectively do you think you have tackled the first part of this brief?

  • I spent too much time on researching instead of idea generating and drawing.
  • My beginning scamps where too scrappy and didn't  effectively portray my ideas however I later improved on my visual communication towards the end of the first part.

Have you been able to exhaust your ideas?

  • I have made attempts to exhaust all my Ideas however as I said before I spent a bit too much time on my research and not enough on development of ideas.
How well have you used research to support the development of your idea?
  • Research has been the focus of my ideas in allowing me to test them further; finding out personality types to characterise my images made.
  • It allowed me to learn at more unusual facts based on my theme show I could shift the way the idea was going.

Has drawing allowed you to visualise your ideas and evolve them further?

  • Absolutely, it allows me to see if an idea is going to work and if it is how it should be drawn and presented.
  • I allows me to think about the feasibility of an idea. for example if I am spending 1 hour per drawing it may not be the most effective way of drawing.
  • It allows me to see how to get the most visually effective image without having to continuously redo the final poster.

In light of your feedback, what theme/ideas do you intend to develop into a final deliverable poster?

  • A-Z of places to drink wine. As it was one that related directly to me and allowed for more freedom of placement and expression than some of the other themes/ideas did.
  • I will be looking at a series of places, most likely classy/ sophisticated to everyday places I will probably end up drinking wine.
  • The idea of me starting off standing at full hight drinking in a elegant way at an Art gallery in the beginning but at the end being slumped/passed in a Zoo enclosure at the end.
  • It allows me to explore places I potentially will visit in the future while doing having a drink.
  • The tone of voice should indicate both humour and the underling message of how alcohol can deteriorate how you present yourself.

What are the next steps required in development and refinement of your poster?

  • I need to look at how I am going to show a gradual deterioration of myself during each scene.
  • Draw out alternate scenarios for letters and look at composition
  • Look at if i want the line work and drawing to reflect the gradual intoxication.
  • Maybe work with brush pen cause it allows a lucidity and consistency to it's line work.

OUIL403 A-Z initial ideas and themes

  • I like the idea of the heads interacting more with one another and fixing one emotion to each character to get a better idea of each persons personality.
A-Z Of People Throughout History Who Have Been Decapitated
  • Mixing different Gods together to create scenarios which allows the poster to tell a story rather than just list.

A-Z Of Gods and Goddesses form around the world

  • I enjoy the ornateness of this piece and think if each portrait contains a certain amount of detail it won't seem as uninteresting as a poster of faces.
A-Z Of Women From Different Culture

  •  More along to do with me personally and my love affair with wine and thinking of places I will, if I haven't already drink wine. Pretty much turned the brief into a to-do list.

OUIL404- Reference & Observation drawing

Drawing from reference
  • Allows you to spend more time looking at an image at your own convenience than you can with observational drawing
  • If you need a reference of something you couldn't go see; like the sub saharan landscape.
  • However you can be tricked into copying the image rather than translating it into your own tone of voice.

  Drawing from Observation:
  • You develop the skill of being able to translate an 3d object into a 2D object
  • You are translating the would around you into your own tone of voice.
  • It forces you look at the object in a different light and think of more ways to express the image without straight up drawing it photographically.
  • You can be limited in the time you can draw something, and observation is not always suitable for a brief, especially a limited time brief.

OUIL404- 10 Observational drawings

  •   Something from above
  • Unnecessary

  • Walking/Sitting/Standing- Preferred drawing people sitting to walking as I tended not not have as much time as I'd of liked.
  • Architectural

  • Old
  • Organic

  • Unnoticed- Found that limiting the amount of lines in a piece such as this one is more effective than over embellishing.

  • Held in your hand.

  • That made you smile- This screaming toad/chameleon cup was amazing and I when draw it from every angle I found myself craving a up like this.

  • You heard/Smelt- An old woman after seeing Henry VIII cod piece.
Overall I found the experience very enjoy able, it forced me to think differently about how I could translate a piece of 3D work into a 2D drawing and got me being a lot looser with my line work. I prefer quieter places like museums or galleries to draw in comparison to university grounds and busy streets as there tends so be more time to spend drawing a object or person and it is not as overwhelming.
